The Company
After years of studying in libraries, labs, bars, and fields, Three Spirit, offers non-alcoholic herbal elixirs that have been expertly crafted to provide plant-based alternatives to traditional alcoholic beverages. Launching in the UK in 2018, they can now be found in the best bars across the globe.
Three Spirit is the notion of their being a third way, with alchemy at the heart of everything they do: focusing entirely on the health benefits, function, and flavour of their drink. The B Corp brand celebrates everything you put into a drink, rather than what you take out of it.
The Aim
Three Spirit’s notion of alchemy runs through their roots, and with this, they needed a bottle that would intertwine seamlessly with their foundation. With an existing relationship, and our profound expertise in the art of glass packaging, Three Spirit came to us looking for a bottle that would elevate their brand, deliver their message, and distinguish who they are.
Although they are a keen non-alcoholic favourite in the UK, we also accounted for scalability to ensure their packaging was right to support their growth aspirations in the US market.
The Design
Whilst other bottles disappear on a shelf, Three Spirit wanted to possess a prominent position with a mystique and intriguing look.
As the brand has a huge focus on alchemy, it was only right that the Three Spirit bottle reflected this, using a bespoke design that looked like an old medicine bottle. The direction of the triangles on the bottle reflects the mood of each drink; up for livener, forward for social and down for nightcap by using organic and UV inks in the decoration, we were able to make these key features stand out with bold on shelf colours whist giving Three Spirits a sustainable print solution.
Sustainable Ingredients
As a B Corp, Three Spirit is extremely mindful of its impact on the planet. Buying glass from foreign manufacturers was not only environmentally challenging but also an operational nightmare with long lead times.
Three Spirit is highly motivated to make improvements to be as sustainable as they can, and choosing a local supplier for glass and decoration, who shares their sustainable ethos, meant they could be proactive in developing a more environmentally conscious bottle design.
Working alongside Three Spirit, we reduced the weight of their product, by carefully crafting a design which encompassed a lighter bottle and is primarily composed of recycled content. With their new 500ml bottle weighing 460g and their 200ml bottle at 200g.
Reducing the materials in the bottle meant that not only is less energy required in manufacturing, but also significantly reduces the energy output in shipping. Modelling a bottle with sustainability as a core consideration has enabled Three Spirit to leverage carbon footprint reductions across their entire supply chain, achieving a more seamless and recyclable process
Final Bottle Enhancements
The decoration of the bottle emphasises sustainability. UV and organic inks were used to decorate the bottle and enhance the Three Spirit branding. As non-invasive materials, we were able to achieve lower curing temperatures than if we were to use ceramic inks, creating a more sustainable decoration process to complement the ethos of the brand.
Final Thoughts
The Three Spirit bottle design was approved by the client in April 2023, with the final bottle design launched in the UK in August 2023. The team at Three Spirit were delighted with their bottle design which represented them as a brand. Not only that the team noted that our proactive and enthusiastic approach from the start of their bottle journey forged a strong relationship from the outset.
