Embracing Sustainability: Discovering the Green Change in Drinking Spirits

Sustainability has been a popular buzzword for some time now, with many industries bringing in new eco-conscious practices to better fit with consumer values. But while glass manufacturers have historically managed to rest on the laurels of glass’s infinite recyclability, further shifts in consumer values might mean that businesses will need to look towards more unique ways to improve their sustainability credentials.

After all, eco-consciousness in glass packaging is now an expectation not a USP.

The Shift in Eco-conscious Expectations

Glass has always been one of the most eco-conscious materials widely available on the market, something that many in the industry have taken for granted as recent consumer trends have begun shifting towards a greener outlook. But this is no longer enough. With consumers becoming wise to many industries greenwashing tactics, sustainability, and in particular transparent sustainability, is now a consumer expectation not a want. In fact, 11% of customers agree that they will make a purchase based on a products available carbon footprint data and one in four are prepared to pay more for sustainable packaging. These statistics are expected to rise as consumers become increasingly aware of the manufacturing processes involved in creating products, and the negative rhetoric of some brands inability to keep up with the times becomes more widespread.

Moreover, consumers’ perception of what makes a premium glass product has evolved over the past years. Traditionally, heavy weighted glass bottles were used to signify a luxurious drink product, but trends now indicate that the average middle-shelf consumer is increasingly looking for aesthetically pleasing glass packaging that has a low carbon footprint, something that needs to be communicated through the spirit’s overall brand message. This shift in consumers’ spirit choices shows a distinct change in the spirit market, as individuals step away from traditional markers of quality and instead choose products that speak to their values.

Overall, we are increasingly seeing that sustainability is becoming an expectation not a USP when it comes to drinks’ glass bottle packaging. Brands must acknowledge this if they wish to stay ahead in a highly competitive market.

The Current State of the European Off-the-Shelf Packaging Market

The European off-the-shelf glass packaging market has seen many changes over the past 5 years, with brands being influenced by consumer trends to stand out on the saturated supermarket shelf. This has led traditional and emerging brands alike to focus on the scalability and uniqueness of their bottles to secure a position as an established brand. From glass embossing to striking shapes, the glass bottles available at a consumer level represent an infinite collage of unique designs.

But, on the production side, many manufacturers have been reluctant to evolve their off-the-shelf products in line with this changing landscape.

With their ability to drive down a business’s bottom line in comparison to their bespoke counterparts, while keeping in line with consumer trends, off-the-shelf packaging remains a popular choice within the sector. However, many glass bottle manufacturers don’t see that their off-the-shelf lines can also be their most sustainable products. Giving their clients the ability to scale their drink creations while also keeping in line with wider market shifts. After all, many emerging and established brands alike are expecting more from themselves when it comes to their sustainability credentials. From obtaining B Corp status to localising their supply chain, businesses are looking to better fit in line with consumer trends. So why not give them a more in-tune off-the-shelf option?

Nuanced Levels of Sustainability Glass Packaging

To align their glass bottle packaging more closely with consumer preferences for sustainability, businesses must take a comprehensive look at their manufacturing supply chain. After all true eco-consciousness lies in the foundation of a business, not in the add-ons.

When looking at the supply chain, one of the most nuanced ways a brand can achieve this is through the integration of a majority cullet formulation in the glass bottle production cycle. Embodying both bark and bite by significantly enhancing a bottles green credentials through increased recycled content and reduced waste, alongside still providing a high-quality glass bottle. In addition to this, switching up your glass formulation also gives you the perfect opportunity to reduce your glass bottle weight. Coupled with a localised manufacturing base, reducing your glass bottle weight leads to enhanced transport efficiency, further serving as a powerful means to curtail transport emissions.

By prioritising sustainable sourcing and manufacturing methods, brands can authentically align with consumer values, ensuring that the glass bottle’s visual on-the-shelf aesthetic remains intact. This holistic approach not only responds to the growing consumer demand for sustainable products but also underscores a commitment to environmental responsibility throughout the entire lifecycle of the glass bottle, from conception to reuse.

The Future of Sustainable Glass Manufacturing

The future of off-the-shelf glass packaging lies in increased sustainability. Embracing eco-consciousness in glass product offerings is not merely a trend; it is an expectation that defines current and future choices in a modern marketplace, as well as future legislation. With the UK plans to be Net Zero by 2050, manufacturers must stay ahead of the curve to ensure success by integrating genuine practices that can then be transparently communicated to their customers. Speaking their values with impactful change rather than token gestures.

Consumers are increasingly discerning towards greenwashing, and appreciate authenticity, making sincere commitment to sustainability not only morally right but also a strategic advantage. Additionally, the shift towards off-the-shelf solutions is undeniable, driven by the need for flexibility and prime efficiency. Providing a sustainable option within this area not only aligns with environmental consciousness but also caters to the pragmatic preferences of many brands. By proactively providing sustainable alternatives in off-the-shelf- glass bottles, businesses can not only meet current market expectations but also position themselves as leaders in a market that values both versatility and ecological responsibility.

18th of November marks International Poitin Day.

Poitin is a traditional Irish spirit, typically distilled between 40%-70% ABV that dates back to 1st Century AD. Historically the spirit was outlawed in Ireland as a result of taxation in 1661, but more recently has had a revival, being legalised in 1997.

Poitin carries an abundance of Irish heritage, being made with native ingredients such as barley, potatoes, and oats. Today Poitin is quickly gaining popularity, as it’s exported across countries, telling its story across borders.

Embodying Irish craftsmanship, @DrinkMadMarchHare_ celebrates heritage in every bottle. They expertly produce smooth, authentic poitin, encompassed in a decadent glass bottle created by Verallia.

Today marks an artistry that is often described as ‘fiercely Irish’.
